Personal Copies of Chuka Printed
Dear Faithful Reader,
I’ve created a new tradition. I thought it might be encouraging to see my book in print, but I’m not ready at this point for the self-publishing world. Many services don’t allow you to print a personal copy of a book while keeping the book unpublished. My ultimate goal is to publish my novels through a traditional publisher. For another book, I used a service that specializes in printing doctoral theses, and while the quality of the book was great, it was 8.5” x 11” paper. I was really hoping for something more like a traditional hard cover novel. So, these were my goals:
Keep the book unpublished so that I may submit to a traditional publisher later
Hardcover book with a familiar fiction-novel size
So I’ve done some searching and come up with what I think may be a pretty good solution. Barnes & Noble has an intriguing book printing service which appears to fulfill all of the requirements. Personal copies. The option to keep the book unpublished. Hard cover with a dust jacket. Familiar size of 6.14” x 9.21”. And complete custom design. No B&N logo required. By appearance, it’s perfect.
So, I cracked open the laptop and dusted off my InDesign and Photoshop skills, things that have gone largely-ignored since my days in Newspaper production management. And I designed what I believe is a damn good book. Not perfect, but damn good.
And I submitted it. They approved the design. Printed it. And right now, two copies of the book are in transit from Nashville, TN to Bakersfield, CA.
The excitement is unbearable!
For all writers out there, this may be the way to go if you want a quick one-off motivational print of your novel.
I’ll update you when the books arrive tomorrow.
